How do free cooling and dry coolers cut cooling costs?

Free cooling uses cold outside air to cool the process water instead of a refrigeration compressor circuit, whenever the outside temperature is low enough relative to the water temperature the process needs. When conditions allow it, the chiller compressors idle or run at reduced load, which directly cuts electricity consumption. A dry cooler goes a step further — it rejects heat to air with no refrigeration circuit at all, purely through air flowing over a heat exchanger, and can run on its own during colder periods or alongside a chiller that takes over once the outside temperature rises.
